This weekend the puck drops on the NHL All Star Game this Sunday in Ottawa. As expected with large sporting events, the NHL has lined up performances to add to the spectacle, headlined by Toronto native Drake.
The NHL’s choice is a little puzzling, as hip-hop isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of hockey. Although I’m sure Alex Ovechkin would disagree with me. To be fair, hockey is decidedly Canadian, the game is in our nation’s capital, and Drake is one of Canada’s leading artists. Considering we haven’t seen the performance yet, history will be the judge if the appearance is a hit or miss.
On that note, here are some flashbacks to other sporting performances that were memorable, funny, and just plain oddball:
Best Halftime Performance (Superbowl XXVII 1993): Never before had a single artist dominated a Superbowl halftime performance, but if anyone could pull it off, there would be no better candidate than Michael Jackson.
Most Memorable Performance (NBA All Star Game 1983): If you haven’t seen this one, now’s the time to catch up on one of the most surprising, but celebrated renditions of the Star Spangled Banner. Marvin Gaye made love to the United States in front of a national audience and is the only one who can get away with it.
Oddest Choice for Halftime Performance (Superbowl XXVI 1992): Anytime you bring out figure skaters during the halftime of a sporting event that glorifies toughness and violence, we can really tell you did your research on the target audience.
The Worst Halftime Sports Performance (Superbowl XXIII 1989): Now there could be a number of choices you can slot here, and I’ll let the video speak for itself, but this guy tried to pull off the biggest magical trick on national television and failed. But I’m sure somewhere, out there, David Blaine was taking notes for his coming out party.
