—Public, pedestrian space has been eroded over the last century by the car’s insatiable appetite for road space. Thankfully, Madrid’s mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón had the foresight to bury a part of the City’s ring road and allow Dutch design firm West8 and MRIO to re-imagine the 80 hectare space.
Their collective response was to create a series of initial projects, such as the Salon de Pinos linear park, that would help to create the foundation to support further public and private projects in later years. The vision for the area responded to its proximity to the old City centre of Madrid and the River Manzanares. The resulting collection of bridges, gardens, parks, seating areas, water features and walkways is an incredible gift to all visitors and natives of Madrid.
